TruRace Participant Rulebook
TruRace gives runners a better way to compete: against people with similar ability, in real races, for leaderboard position, prizes, recognition, and bragging rights.
Compete against your equals. Win on performance, not genetics.
By participating in TruRace, you agree to follow these rules, compete honestly, and respect the event organizers, volunteers, other runners, and TruRace staff.
This Rulebook is part of and incorporated into the TruRace Terms of Service. By participating in TruRace, you also agree to the Terms, including the assumption of risk, release and waiver, disclaimer of warranties, limitation of liability, indemnification, and binding arbitration and class action waiver provisions. If there is a conflict between this Rulebook and the Terms regarding those provisions, the Terms control.
1. What TruRace Is
TruRace is not a race organizer. TruRace does not own, operate, manage, or control the official races where TruRace heats may occur.
TruRace is an independent competition layer that may use public race results, submitted results, race-day participation, seed times, and other verification tools to create fairer competitions among runners.
Official race rules, safety rules, waivers, start times, course rules, timing rules, and event policies are controlled by the race organizer. All participants must follow the official race organizer's rules.
2. Basic Eligibility
To participate in TruRace, you must have a TruRace account, provide accurate registration information, register for and complete the underlying race if the heat is tied to an in-person event, follow all official race rules, compete honestly and in good faith, and accept TruRace's scoring, verification, and dispute procedures.
TruRace may require participants to verify their identity, race result, bib number, age group, registration status, GPS activity, seed time, or other information before awarding points, prizes, or leaderboard credit.
3. Membership Tiers
TruRace may offer free and paid membership tiers. Benefits may vary by tier.
Free members may participate in limited non-prize TruRace heats and leaderboard activities. Free members are not guaranteed access to cash prize heats.
Starter members may receive access to a limited number of prize heats during their membership year, subject to availability, eligibility, and verification.
Pro members may receive additional prize heat access and higher potential prize amounts than Starter members, subject to availability, eligibility, and verification.
Elite members may receive the highest prize heat access and highest potential prize amounts, subject to availability, eligibility, verification, and any additional Elite eligibility requirements.
TruRace may change tier names, prices, benefits, eligibility rules, and promotional offers over time. Any changes will be posted on the website or communicated through the platform.
4. Membership Year and Prize Heat Access
Prize heat access is based on a participant's paid membership period.
A participant's paid membership year is measured as a rolling 12-month period of paid membership access. Prize heat access does not automatically reset simply because a participant cancels and later reactivates.
This rule is intended to prevent abuse where a participant signs up only for a race, cancels immediately after, and repeats that pattern without maintaining a real membership.
If you cancel and later rejoin, TruRace may preserve your prior paid membership history, prize heat usage, and eligibility status when determining whether you have remaining prize heat access.
Cancellation may also reset or reduce certain benefits, including prize progression, referral credits, promotional benefits, leaderboard eligibility, or accumulated membership perks.
5. Prize Heat Limits
Prize heat access may be limited by membership tier.
Current standard annual prize heat limits are: Starter, 2 prize heats per paid membership year; Pro, 4 prize heats per paid membership year; Elite, 8 prize heats per paid membership year.
Prize heat access is not guaranteed for every race. A prize heat must be available, properly formed, and approved by TruRace.
TruRace may limit prize heats by race, location, participant count, membership tier, verification status, event capacity, budget, suspected abuse, or operational constraints.
6. Prize Amounts and Progression
Prize amounts may vary by membership tier and participant history.
Current standard prize structures are: Starter, $100 base prize with $50 progression per completed prize heat and a $150 cap; Pro, $200 base prize with $50 progression per completed prize heat and a $350 cap; Elite, $400 base prize with $50 progression per completed prize heat and a $700 cap.
Prize progression is subject to eligibility, membership status, completed prize heats, verification, and TruRace approval.
Prize amounts may reset at the end of a participant's membership year, if membership is cancelled, after certain prize wins, if TruRace determines abuse or rule violation occurred, or as otherwise stated on the website or in the participant's account.
7. Heat Formation
A TruRace heat is a group of runners placed together for a specific competition.
TruRace may form heats based on seed time or expected finish time, historical race performance, verified race results, age, sex, other competition-relevant categories where appropriate, membership tier, available participants at a race, race distance, course type, race conditions, and TruRace's internal fairness model.
Heat size may vary. A typical heat may have 7 or 8 runners, but TruRace may allow smaller or larger heats at its discretion.
TruRace may move participants between heats before results are finalized if needed to preserve fairness, correct errors, handle missing participants, or address verification issues.
8. Seed Times
Participants may be asked to provide a seed time or expected finish time for a specific race distance.
Your seed time should reflect your honest expected performance. You may not intentionally provide an inaccurate seed time to gain a competitive advantage.
TruRace may adjust your seed time based on verified results, recent race history, suspicious activity, performance history, connected activity data, or other relevant information.
Participants may be limited in how often they can manually update seed times. TruRace may require seed time changes to be supported by recent race results, training data, or other verification.
9. Honest Effort Requirement
TruRace is built on real competition.
Participants are expected to make an honest competitive effort in TruRace heats. You do not have to run a personal record, but you may not intentionally underperform, manipulate your seed time, misrepresent your ability, or coordinate with others to gain an unfair advantage.
Prohibited behavior includes sandbagging, intentionally submitting slow results, running under another person's bib, letting someone else run under your TruRace account, misstating your seed time, coordinating to manipulate results, cutting the course, falsifying GPS or race result data, hiding prior results or using alternate identities, and joining only for prize access in a way that violates membership rules.
TruRace may disqualify participants, remove points, revoke prizes, suspend accounts, or ban participants for dishonest competition.
10. Race Result Verification
TruRace may verify results using one or more methods, including official race results, chip times, gun times, bib numbers, finish-line video, race photos, GPS files or activity links, Strava, Garmin, other connected activity data, participant-submitted evidence, and manual review.
Official chip time is generally preferred when available. If chip time is not available, TruRace may use gun time, official placement, manual review, video, or other reasonable methods.
TruRace may delay prize approval or leaderboard updates until results are verified.
11. Gun-Time and Non-Chip Races
Some races may not use chip timing.
For gun-time races, TruRace may still create heats, but scoring may rely on official gun time, finish order, bib verification, manual review, video, or other available evidence.
Participants understand that non-chip races may have less precise timing. TruRace will make a good-faith effort to score fairly, but final scoring decisions remain at TruRace's discretion.
12. Points and Leaderboards
TruRace may award points based on heat placement.
Current standard prize heat points are: 1st, 20; 2nd, 17; 3rd, 15; 4th, 14; 5th, 13; 6th, 12; 7th, 11; 8th, 10.
Current standard non-prize heat points are: 1st, 14; 2nd, 12; 3rd, 10; 4th, 9; 5th, 8; 6th, 7; 7th, 6; 8th, 5.
TruRace may use different scoring systems for special events, pilot programs, team competitions, club rankings, seasonal leaderboards, or promotional contests.
Leaderboards may be separated by membership tier, seed time, location, race distance, season, club, or other categories.
TruRace may count only a participant's best results toward certain leaderboards and may require a minimum number of completed heats to qualify for awards.
13. Prize Eligibility
To be eligible for a prize, a participant must have an eligible membership at the time required by TruRace, be placed in an approved prize heat, complete the underlying race, have their result verified, follow all race and TruRace rules, provide required payout information, not be disqualified by the race organizer or TruRace, and meet any additional requirements listed for the specific race, heat, promotion, or leaderboard.
Prize eligibility is not guaranteed simply by signing up, joining a race, or becoming a paid member.
14. Payouts
Prize payouts may require identity verification, tax information, payment account setup, or third-party payout onboarding.
TruRace may use third-party payment providers to process payouts.
Participants are responsible for providing accurate payout information. TruRace is not responsible for delayed or failed payouts caused by inaccurate information, failure to complete onboarding, payment provider issues, bank issues, or legal/tax restrictions.
TruRace may withhold, delay, cancel, or reverse a payout if there is suspected fraud, rule violation, account abuse, identity mismatch, result dispute, or payout compliance issue.
Participants are responsible for any taxes related to prizes, awards, or other benefits received through TruRace.
15. Disputes and Corrections
Participants may dispute a heat result, placement, points award, or prize decision by contacting TruRace within the dispute window stated for the event.
If no specific dispute window is listed, disputes must be submitted within 7 days of the result being posted by TruRace.
A dispute should include relevant evidence, such as an official race result link, bib number, GPS activity, finish photo or video, timing correction from the race organizer, or explanation of the issue.
TruRace will review disputes in good faith. TruRace's final decision is binding for TruRace scoring, points, prizes, and leaderboard purposes.
If the official race organizer later changes official results, TruRace may update heat results, points, or prizes accordingly.
16. Cancellations, No-Shows, and DNFs
If a participant signs up for a TruRace heat but does not start, does not finish, is disqualified, or does not appear in official results, TruRace may mark the participant as DNS, DNF, unverified, or disqualified.
A no-show may still count against prize heat access if TruRace determines the participant occupied a limited prize heat spot and failed to participate without a valid reason.
TruRace may make exceptions for race cancellation, injury, emergency, timing errors, or other circumstances at its discretion.
17. Transfers and Bib Changes
Participants may not transfer a TruRace heat entry, account, prize eligibility, or leaderboard position to another person.
If the underlying race allows bib transfers, the participant must notify TruRace and receive approval before the heat is scored.
Running under another person's bib without approval may result in disqualification, loss of prize eligibility, suspension, or ban.
18. Account Integrity
Each participant may have only one TruRace account unless TruRace gives written permission.
Participants may not create duplicate accounts to reset prize eligibility, hide prior results, manipulate seed times, claim referral credits, or avoid enforcement actions.
TruRace may merge, suspend, or delete duplicate accounts.
19. Referrals and Credits
TruRace may offer referral credits, discounts, or promotional benefits.
Referral credits have no cash value unless specifically stated. Credits may be lost if a membership is cancelled, refunded, reversed, or found to be abusive.
Self-referrals, fake accounts, duplicate accounts, payment manipulation, or coordinated referral abuse are prohibited.
20. Conduct
Participants must treat other runners, race staff, volunteers, spectators, organizers, and TruRace staff with respect.
Prohibited conduct includes harassment, threats, abusive language, discrimination, cheating accusations made publicly without evidence, interference with race operations, unsafe behavior, tampering with another participant's race or result, and misuse of TruRace branding or communications.
TruRace may remove participants from heats, leaderboards, events, or the platform for misconduct.
21. Relationship With Race Organizers
TruRace may partner with, coordinate with, sponsor, exhibit at, or appear at races. However, unless specifically stated, TruRace is not the race organizer.
The race organizer controls the official race. TruRace controls TruRace heats, points, prizes, and leaderboards.
Participation in TruRace does not replace race registration. Participants are responsible for registering for the official race separately unless TruRace explicitly states otherwise.
22. Safety
Participants are responsible for determining whether they are physically able to participate in a race.
TruRace does not provide medical advice. Participants should consult a medical professional before participating in strenuous activity if they have health concerns.
Participants must follow all course rules, traffic rules, volunteer instructions, weather warnings, and race safety instructions.
No prize, leaderboard position, or competition result is worth risking injury or unsafe behavior.
23. Photos, Video, and Public Results
By participating in TruRace, participants understand that race results, names, placements, heat assignments, leaderboard standings, photos, video, or other competition-related content may be displayed publicly on the TruRace website, social media, promotional materials, or race-related communications.
TruRace may use public race data and submitted participant data to operate the platform.
Participants should review TruRace's Privacy Policy for more information about data collection and use.
24. Pilot Programs and Special Promotions
TruRace may run pilot programs, founding member offers, promotional competitions, special prize pools, or limited-time events.
Pilot and promotional rules may differ from standard rules. If special rules are posted for a specific pilot, race, or promotion, those rules apply in addition to this Rulebook.
If there is a conflict between this Rulebook and a specific posted promotion rule, the more specific promotion rule controls for that promotion.
25. Rule Changes
TruRace may update this Rulebook over time.
Changes may apply immediately unless otherwise stated. Material changes may be posted on the website or communicated through the platform.
Continued use of TruRace after rules are updated means the participant accepts the updated rules.
26. Final Authority
TruRace has final authority over TruRace heat formation, scoring, verification, points, leaderboard placement, prize eligibility, membership benefits, enforcement actions, and interpretation of these rules.
TruRace will make reasonable efforts to apply rules fairly and consistently, but reserves the right to make judgment calls when circumstances are unclear, incomplete, unusual, or not specifically covered by this Rulebook.
Plain-English Summary
TruRace is built for fair competition. Run honestly. Use your real identity. Submit an honest seed time. Do not sandbag. Do not create duplicate accounts. Do not abuse memberships just to get race-day prize access. Follow the official race rules. Let TruRace verify results before prizes are final.
You do not need to be the fastest. You just need to win your race.
